WINE PAIRING OF THE WEEK: Henry of Pelham Estate Riesling & Crispy Potato Pierogies
Lively, just off-dry Riesling, crafted with the grapes grown at the estate’s oldest vineyards’ on the Short Hills Bench in Ontario’s Niagara. Fresh and fruity with crisp acidity. Bursting with aromas and flavours of white peaches, green apples and lime zest with a touch of minerality and petrol on the long, clean finish. VINTAGES#: 557165, $17.95. Tasted January 2016/91 points.
Pierogies originated in Eastern Europe and have taken over the world. Tasty and delicious, they are usually filled with potatoes, bacon, cheese and for a sweet version, ripe fruit. They may be served with toppings such as melted butter, sour cream and even fried onion. The traditional savory kind is usually presented with onion, and the sweet one with sour cream.
On my recent visit to Ottawa’s Murray Kitchen restaurant at the ByWard Market I enjoyed “AARON’S PIEROGIES”. Potato & cheddar pierogies with braised cabbage & pork belly, crème fraiche and kimchi sauce for dipping. Crisp and delicious, they make a perfect companion to this aromatic and mouth-watering Niagara Riesling.
